Southwestern France. 1594. For the peasant farmers of rural France, life is a backbreaking grind of endless work, little food and poor health, made worse by oppressive taxes, expensive wars and the threat of Muslim pirates from North Africa, who enslave the Catholic inhabitants of coastal towns. On his poor family's small plot of land, a young man dreams of a way out of his miserable existence. This is the story of Vincent de Paul.
