Quincy, Illinois. 1869. Gus excels as a student at St. Peter's, championed by Father McGirr. But outside the school, the mostly white community boils with tension, harasses Gus for the color of his skin, threatens Father McGirr with violence, and jeopardizes Gus's future at the school. In the face of such threats and turmoil, Gus begins to wonder: how can he be called to change men's hearts, when their hearts are full of hatred toward him?
