Elizabeth of Hungary - princess, wife, and mother - pours herself out for the poor. She gives alms, bread, clothing, and even the treasures of the castle to the beggars at the gate. She exemplifies fortitude and hope as she bears the court's mockery, the murder of her mother, the loss of her beloved husband, exile, and separation from her children — clinging throughout to the Scripture her mother taught her: "Be strong and of good courage… for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."
This series contains moments of fear and intensity. There are allusions to the murder of Elizabeth’s mother, Queen Gertrude, and to the Crusades. A leper covered in sores is brought into the castle, and the story dwells on a severe famine in which the starving strip bark from trees for food. The most intense event occurs in Episode 5, when the newly widowed Elizabeth and her infant are cast out of the castle into the snow.
