England. 1605. King James, the Protestant successor to the throne, has increased the persecution of Catholics in England. In response, a group of renegade Catholics have conspired to murder the King, the royal family and all the members of Parliament. While Nicholas knows nothing of the conspirators’ plans, Father Garnet has learned of them, and is bound by the confessional seal.
