Oxford, 1583. Under the oppressive rule of Queen Elizabeth I, English Catholics are worried: priests are being sent to Europe for protection. And young men entering the priesthood must leave England or face death. As one Catholic family of master craftsmen prepares to say goodbye to two of their sons, the third has suddenly gone missing. Why is he hiding? And where can he be? This is the story of Nicholas Owen.

Rating Reason

Nicholas Owen’s unbreakable fidelity to the Church gives a timeless witness of faith under persecution. Unwilling to betray his friends, even when they are doing wrong, he generously gives himself up as a sacrifice for others. Nicholas’ ingenuity and obedience to his superiors show his ultimate courage and humility.

This series contains moments of danger and intensity, including raised voices. It portrays imprisonment, coercive interrogation, references to torture, and political violence. There are mentions of characters being tortured on the rack, hanged, and killed. Treason is discussed openly. The final episode includes dialogue about dying for others and depicts a sacrificial act of misdirection that leads to arrest and death.
