Robert Southwell
The Poet and the Queen
England. 1570. A Kingdom divided by religion. Queen Elizabeth I rules a Protestant land, but Catholic unrest simmers beneath the surface. Across Europe, powerful forces plot to restore a Catholic monarch to the English throne. In secret, a young boy of seven yearns to practice his faith freely. But can faith survive in a land that calls it treason? This is the story of Robert Southwell, an audio drama from The Merry Beggars.

Rating Reason
Robert Southwell’s story is one of unwavering faith, courage, and sacrificial love for God and country. As a boy, he risks himself to shelter a hunted priest, and he later becomes a Jesuit priest who returns to England knowing it may cost him his life. He shows great fortitude, refusing under torture to betray anyone, and forgives and prays for the Queen who condemns him. His faith never wavers, even to his final words at his execution.
This series contains many moments of danger, intensity, and suspense. Catholic families are raided, and priests are hunted throughout. Robert himself is captured and tortured, and his trial, sentencing, and execution by hanging are depicted in the finale. There are references to other executions and to massacres of Catholics and Protestants in Europe.
