Augustus Tolton
Hope and Holiness Against the Odds
Missouri, 1861. As a Civil War rages between the Northern and Southern states, tens of thousands of enslaved black men escape bondage to join the Union Army and fight for freedom. Among them is Peter Paul Tolton, whose young son will be forever changed by his father’s sacrifice. This is the story of the first African-American Catholic priest, Father Augustus Tolton.

Rating Reason
Augustus Tolton is a model of perseverance and fortitude. He suffers through prejudice, poverty, and repeated rejection, but he never abandons his faith. Through it all, he pursues his vocational calling to the priesthood. He is charitable and compassionate to all he meets, offering a friendly ear to anyone who needs it.
This series contains moments of danger and intensity, including raised voices. A brief scene depicts young Augustus and his mother fleeing slavery, pursued by men with guns and hounds. Augustus endures racism and racial injustice, including multiple rejections from seminaries, a mentor’s collapse into alcoholism, and his own spiritual despair. He works in degrading conditions at a saloon and a factory. Characters argue over justice, and a priest is found unconscious from drinking.
